Online Friends

I started on the internet in 1998 and I didn't know anybody else who was online. I was lucky because my ISP had a very good forum and I soon made friends there. That means I have online friends I've known for about twelve years. Since then, I've made many more friends online over the years. Many of them have similar tastes and interests to mine, as might be expected of friends, so we bump into each other on different websites and forums that we have joined without consulting each other. People who don't use the web don't understand how close you can become to somebody you've never met in the real world. Sometimes you don't even know what they look like although that is becoming more unlikely with the prevalence of photos on all kinds of networks now. I feel close to some of my online friends. I tell them things about myself that I only tell close friends and they share confidences with me too. Sometimes it's easier to talk about a difficult subject with this kind of friend than it is to one in the 'real' world. We end up sharing friends and acquaintances so we gossip just like friends who meet up for lunch, dinner or drinks. When we hear they are ill or have some other serious problem, we worry about them and send them messages of support and sympathy. One of the best things is that you can usually find an online friend to chat anytime, day or night, because so many of us live in different time zones, so we don't even have to suffer insomnia alone. I wouldn't be without my online friends. |
